Pissed off about Fyfe

Nat Fyfe of Fremantle was far too good in 2015 winning the Brownlow Medal as predicted by many.
By Mark Franklin

I’m once again pissed off at the AFL media but bare with me, this is a positive vent.

Nat Fyfe winning the 2015 AFL Brownlow Medal is a wonderful story that made an undeniably dry and flaccid, Monday night TV event worthwhile.

So why am I annoyed?

Cam McCarthy of the Giants is congratulated by Devon Smith, Ryan Griffen and Jeremy Cameron of the Giants after kicking a goal during the round one AFL match between the St Kilda Saints and the Greater Western Sydney Giants at Etihad Stadium on April 5, 2015 in Melbourne, Australia.

As a lifelong Essendon devotee I have over three decades of healthy hatred for Carlton and Hawthorn. In recent years, in a way, I have missed the fierce rivalry between the Bombers and Blues, but those Hawks remain the most satisfying of all adversaries to overcome. Yet, there grows a new disdain.

I hate the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The team with the league’s longest name and shortest history already pisses me right off.

Michael Walters is now a quality AFL forward and it is not by chance. The natural talent that he displays has recently propelled him to fan favourite status among the loyal Fremantle crowds, however this is only a small part of the equation.

The 22 year old was drafted by the Dockers with the 53rd pick of the 2008 National Draft along with Stephen Hill (3rd), Hayden Ballantyne (21st), Nick Suban (24th) and Zac Clarke (37th). Between them the quintet have tallied an impressive 309 AFL games all for the team that picked them. Of these five regular contributors Walters has played the least games (29) at the highest level.

Throughout his youth Walters grew up kicking a footy on the same street as Nic Naitanui and Chris Yarran, so perhaps it was no surprise that in 2007 he shared the Kevin Sheehan Medal with Tom Scully as the best player in the Under 16 National Championships. He then went on to be named to the All-Australian Under 18 Team in 2008.

Unless you are a Western Bulldogs fan you are probably unaware that Will Minson is currently playing his tenth season of AFL football.

The 28 year old was drafted by the Dogs with their 20th pick in 2002 from Norwood in the SANFL. The 198cm veteran currently leads the AFL in hitouts and is averaging over 113 SuperCoach points per game, ranking him inside the top twenty for 2013.

During a press conference this week Minson appropriately addressed the consistency question marks that have plagued his Bulldogs since their string of three consecutive unsuccessful Preliminary Final appearances from 2008 to 2010.
